Learn More About Pharmacogenetics

Pharmacogenetics is a field of science that studies how variations in the DNA sequence (which contains the genetic instruction) influence an individual's response to drug therapy. While still in its infancy, pharmacogenetics offers the promise of identifying genetic markers (DNA variations) that could help predict how a specific individual may respond to a specific drug treatment. While the terms pharmacogenetics and pharmacogenomics tend to be used interchangeably, pharmacogenetics usually refers to the study of one or few genes of interest, whereas pharmacogenomics examines the entire genome. Pharmacogenetics and pharmacogenomics are expected to lead to better treatments directed by the needs and characteristics of each individual patient.
